11th month @Stanford
August 2, 2024

TL;DR

Research: I struggled with the direction of my research and plans for next year, and consulted with various people. There were times when I felt powerless, but I want to build my strength carefully without focusing too much on the short term. (Photo: Mission Dolores Park)

Life: The TV is filled with topics about the upcoming presidential election. This month was dramatic, with events like the televised debates, an attempted assassination of Trump, Biden's withdrawal, the Kamala Harris whirlwind, and more.

1. Research

07/18 Japan-US Innovation Award @Stanford
07/23 1on1 w/ Richard Dasher @Stanford
07/25 Visiting Scholar Lunch @Computer History Museum

A friend who is also a Visiting Scholar introduced me to Professor Richard Dasher of Stanford US-ATMC, who is renowned in the field of technology management. He kindly invited me to meetings, gave me opportunities for one-on-one discussions, and was very helpful. He said he would continue to advise me from the perspective of technological social implementation and business, so I plan to visit him again when the timing is right.

I visited the Computer History Museum and had lunch with members of the CS Visiting Scholars.

Progress

I couldn't spend much time coding, and while worrying about the direction of my research, I was catching up with the latest research trends. Notable releases include Llama 3.1 and SAM2 from Meta; especially the latter is expected to have a significant impact on AI services related to images. I also plan to try Genkit, a new feature released by my favorite service, Firebase. I'm also interested in SearchGPT and Advanced Voice Mode from OpenAI.

Independence Day Celebration

I participated in a local event. I was able to experience America's Independence Day firsthand. American flags were displayed everywhere, and people wearing flag-patterned clothes were walking around. Fireworks were launched at night, and I enjoyed the whole day.

Oakland: California Museum

I learned about the history of California, including the era of indigenous peoples, Spanish colonial times, the Gold Rush, the forced internment of Japanese Americans, hippie culture, the civil rights movement of African Americans, and LGBTQ history.

Road Trip: Northern California 3 Days

I attempted my first overnight road trip in the U.S. The total driving distance was over 1,000 miles. I visited places like Napa, Sonoma, Redwood National Park, and Mt. Shasta. In Redwood National Park, the Fern Canyon Trail was particularly adventurous and enjoyable. I got a speeding ticket ($450) along the way, which was a painful expense, but it still became a fun memory.
